A general framework for indicator design and use with application to the assessment of coastal water quality and marine protected area management ArchiMer
Beliaeff, Benoit; Pelletier, Dominique.
Environmental management decisions based upon indicators are the end point of a process involving stakeholders and scientists. These steps should be explicit and follow a chronology. This paper presents a general framework for the design and use of management-oriented indicators, integrating management questions and performance criteria. We first examined the desirable characteristics of indicators aimed at providing decision-support for marine environmental management. Ideally, one should select the indicator that guarantees a safe and unambiguous decision leading to the appropriate measures in terms of regulation, remediation or control. In the present study, indicators are assessed according to two criteria: relevance and effectiveness. Relevance...

Acetylcholinesterase activity in copepods (Tigriopus brevicornis) from the Vilaine River estuary, France, as a biomarker of neurotoxic contaminants ArchiMer
Forget, Joelle; Beliaeff, Benoit; Bocquene, Gilles.
From April 1997 to June 1998, 14 measurements of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymatic activity were performed with the copepod, Tigriopus brevicornis, collected at five stations in the Vilaine River estuary (South Brittany, France). Simultaneously, four chemical analyses of triazines and one analysis of total pesticides in water were undertaken. AChE activity levels in T brevicornis were compared to the levels measured at a reference site not exposed to effluents from Vilaine River. Results reveal significant differences between AChE activity levels depending on location of stations in the plume of the river with an increasing gradient of activity from the upstream to the downstream stations, thus indicating that neurotoxic contaminants are mainly brought...

Assessing the impact of different management options using ISIS-Fish*: the French Merluccius merluccius Nephrops norvegicus mixed fishery of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Drouineau, Hilaire; Mahevas, Stephanie; Pelletier, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit.
In this paper, we present an approach to compare the impact of different management options oil the dynamics of a mixed fishery. We used ISIS-Fish, a simulation tool aimed at evaluating the impact of spatial and seasonal management measures on the dynamics of mixed fisheries. The French Nephrops norvegicus (Norway lobster) Merluccius merluccius (hake) mixed fishery of the Bay of Biscay was chosen as a Study case. First, we parameterised the Population and exploitation models. We then selected several management measures, including marine protected fishermen's reaction to each measure. Then, a sensitivity analysis (MPAs) and total allowable catches (TAC), and parameterised fish sensitivity analysis was performed according to a fractional factorial...

Brachidontes variabilis and Patella sp as quantitative biological indicators for cadmium, lead and mercury in the Lebanese coastal waters ArchiMer
Nakhle, Khaled; Cossa, Daniel; Khalaf, Ghaby; Beliaeff, Benoit.
The mussel, Brachidontes variabilis, and the limpet, Patella sp., were used as indicators to monitor cadmium, lead and mercury concentrations along the Lebanese coast. Studies were carried out in order to define the best strategy for assessing and minimizing the effects of size and physiological condition on the metal contents of the molluscs, and corrective models were constructed. Metal concentrations in surface water were measured to estimate bioconcentration factors (BCFs). The BCFs varied from 8.3 x 10(3) to 3.4 x 10(4), from 7.5 x 10(3) to 8.0 X 10(3) and from 3.0 x 10(4) to 3.2 x 10(4), for Cd, Pb and Hg, respectively. For limpets, BCFs varied from 1.7 x 10(4) to 7.4 x 10(4) for Cd, from 2.5 x 10(3) to 6 x 103 for Pb and remained fairly constant at...

Cadmium and mercury in Seine Estuary flounders and mussels: the results of two decades of monitoring ArchiMer
Nakhle, K; Cossa, Daniel; Claisse, Didier; Beliaeff, Benoit; Simon, S.
The flounder (Platichthys flesus) is a flatfish that inhabits marine coastal environments, especially estuaries. It is an alternative quantitative biological indicator to the common marine mussel (Mytilus spp.), which is currently used as a sentinel species to monitor chemical contamination in numerous monitoring programmes. Findings from two decades of monitoring cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) using both sentinel species in the Seine Estuary (France) are reported. For comparison, time-series of water concentrations for the same two metals at the mouth of the River Seine are given. Cd concentrations in the liver of the fish and in the soft tissue of mussels show similar temporal trends, consistent with the major temporal variations of Cd concentrations...

New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government...

Detection of shrimp pathogen Vibrio nigripulchritudo in sediments of a New-Caledonian grow-out pond during a drying period ArchiMer
Charme, Marion; Ansquer, Dominique; Vourey, Elodie; Walling, Emilie; Beliaeff, Benoit; Labreuche, Yannick.
Experimental infections together with epidemiological studies have shown that pathogenic and non‐pathogenic isolates of V. nigripulchritudo co‐existed in shrimp farm environment (2, 3). Moreover, obtained results also demonstrated that the “summer syndrome”was caused by a single, possibly emerging, cluster of virulent strains. Consequently, it was hypothesized that pathogenic strains of V. nigripulchritudo may persist from one year to the next in the shrimp farm environment and re‐develop inside the grow‐out system at the following rearing cycle (3). This study was therefore aimed at determining whether V. nigripulchritudo isolates may survive, or not, in a shrimp pond bottom soil during a 18‐week drying period. To this end, V.nigripulchritudo mapping was...

Détermination d’indicateurs de performance des élevages de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Ramage, Yannick; Soulard, Benoit; Beliaeff, Benoit; Herlin, Jose.

Donor effect on cultured pearl nacre development and shell matrix gene expression in Pinctada margaritifera reared in different field sites ArchiMer
Ky, Chin-long; Broustal, Floriane; Koua, Manaarii Sham; Quillien, Virgile; Beliaeff, Benoit.
Understanding the respective roles played by donor and recipient pearl oysters in pearl quality determination in relation to the environment is a challenge for the pearl industry. In most Pinctada species, pearl size is mainly related to recipient oyster growth performance, but also relies to some extent on the biomineralisation activity of the pearl sac, a tissue that originates from the donor oyster mantle. We examined donor effect on pearl size in response to culture in the lagoons on Arutua and Apataki atolls. Overall nacre weight and thickness were greater in Arutua than in Apataki, but sensitivity to the environment differed between donors. Some donors were associated with significantly heavier and thicker nacre in Arutua (I group), while others had...

Estimation of physical and physiological performances of blacklip pearl oyster larvae in view of DEB modeling and recruitment assessment ArchiMer
Sangare, Nathanael; Lo-yat, Alain; Le Moullac, Gilles; Pecquerie, Laure; Thomas, Yoann; Beliaeff, Benoit; Andrefouet, Serge.
In French Polynesia black pearl farming represents one of the dominant business sectors. However, it still entirely relies on unpredictable Pinctada margaritifera spat collection success, which is itself conditioned by larval development completion. To assess the relationship between larval development and recruitment success, we studied under controlled conditions the effect of food concentration on development, growth, ingestion rate, survival and metabolic rate at the larval stage. Larvae were exposed to four different phytoplankton densities (2,5; 7,5; 15 and 30 cell.μL−1). Larvae survived equally all over the range of phytoplankton concentration with an average survival rate of 16% at the end of experiments. Food concentration significantly affected...

Etude de salubrite du gisement naturel de coques (Cerastoderma edule) de la plage Benoit en Baie du Pouliguen-Loire-Atlantique (1989-1990) ArchiMer
Catherine, Martial; Beliaeff, Benoit; Pezeron, Annie.

Explaining dinophysis cf. acuminata abundance in Antifer (Normandy, France) using dynamic linear regression ArchiMer
Soudant, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit; Thomas, G.
Classical regression analysis can be used to model time series. However, the assumption that model parameters are constant over time is not necessarily adapted to the data. In phytoplankton ecology, the relevance of time-varying parameter values has been shown using a dynamic linear regression model (DLRM). DLRMs, belonging to the class of Bayesian dynamic models, assume the existence of a non-observable time series of model parameters, which are estimated on-line, i.e. after each observation. The aim of this paper was to show how DLRM results could be used to explain variation of a time series of phytoplankton abundance. We applied DLRM to daily concentrations of Dinophysis cf. acuminata, determined in Antifer harbour (French coast of the English...

Genetic improvement strategy in small aquaculture industries : the new caledonian shrimp experience ArchiMer
Goyard, Emmanuel; Goarant, Cyrille; Brun, Pierre; Herlin, Jose; Pham, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit; Harache, Yves; Loubersac, Lionel; Patrois, Jacques.
Shrimp farming in New Caledonia relies on the culture of a domesticated strain of Litopenaeus stylirostris introduced from Mexico at a time when genetic principles were of little or no consideration. Since then, advances in agriculture and for some aquatic species of importance led caledonian shrimp farmers to reconsider the appropriateness of a genetic improvement strategy adapted to local biotechnical and economical constraints. This questioning involves many different and interrelated aspects: scientific and technologic (genetics, biosecurity, quarantine, ), economic and organizational (financing, diffusion of genetic improvement) and pedagogic (awareness of farmers). Local institutions, producers associations, research centre and sanitary services...

Impact of environmental variability on Pinctada margaritifera life-history traits: A full life cycle deb modeling approach ArchiMer
Sangare, Nathanael; Lo-yat, Alain; Le Moullac, Gilles; Pecquerie, Laure; Thomas, Yoann; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Le Gendre, Romain; Beliaeff, Benoit; Andréfouët, Serge.
The black-lipped pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera) is extensively farmed in French Polynesia to produce black pearls. For a sustainable management of marine resources, studying interactions between organisms and environment, and the associated factors and processes that will impact their life cycle and thus modulate population dynamics is a major research priority. Here, we describe black-lipped pearl oyster energy acquisition and use, and its control by temperature and food concentration within the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory framework. The model parametrization was based on literature data and a specific laboratory experiment. Model validation was carried out thanks to historical in-situ datasets and a dedicated field survey. Three theoretical...

Influence of Temperature and Pearl Rotation on Biomineralization in the Pearl Oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Le Moullac, Gilles; Schuck, Lucie; Chabrier, Sebastien; Belliard, Corinne; Lyonnard, Pierre; Broustal, Floriane; Soyez, Claude; Saulnier, Denis; Brahmi, Chloe; Ky, Chin-long; Beliaeff, Benoit.
The objective of this study was to observe the impact of temperature on pearl formation using  an integrative approach describing the rotation of the pearls, the rate of nacre deposition, the  thickness of the aragonite tablets and the biomineralizing potential of the pearl sac tissue  though the expression level of some key genes. Fifty pearl oysters were grafted with  magnetized nuclei to allow the rotation of the pearls to be described. Four months later, 32 of  these pearl oysters were exposed to four temperatures (22, 26, 30 and 34°C) for 2 weeks.  Results showed that the rotation speed differed according to the movement direction: pearls  with axial movement (AM) had a significantly higher rotation speed than those with random  movement (RM). Mitigation of sea level rise effects by addition of sediment to shrimp ponds ArchiMer
Della Patrona, Luc; Beliaeff, Benoit; Pickering, T..
In New Caledonia barren salt-pans located landward to mangroves are used for the construction of shrimp ponds. The existing farms are jeopardized by the projected rise in the sea level, because the landward boundaries of ponds are situated at the elevation reached by spring tides. One low-cost strategy for mitigating the effects of sea level rise is to raise the level of the bottom of ponds. To test the effectiveness of such an adaptation, we built 4 experimental ponds in the low-lying zone of an existing 10 ha shrimp pond. The level of the bottom of 2 ponds was raised by adding about 15 cm of agricultural soil. Placing agricultural soil in the pond did not impair the functioning of the shrimp pond ecosystem. On the contrary, it resulted in unexpectedly...

Non‐invasive functional exploration techniques for bivalves with applications to pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Le Moullac, Gilles; Soyez, Claude; Lyonnard, Pierre; Chabrier, Sébastien; Milhade, Leo; Gueguen, Yannick; Beliaeff, Benoit.
Non‐invasive functional exploration techniques can provide information on different aspects of general organism functioning and, unlike lethal or invasive techniques, allow individual organisms to be monitored for as long as necessary. For bivalves, a fairly wide variety of methods and instrumental means exist allowing physiology to be assessed on‐line while keeping animals alive and intact. The current range of non‐invasive techniques for bivalves consists of systems for measuring metabolic flows and valve activity, which can be used on bivalve molluscs for as long as an individual animal's characteristics (e.g. size) make this technically feasible. In this paper, we present some of these non‐invasive techniques with applications for pearl oyster and list...
